A Qualifying Film Festival for the Annual Academy Awards®

The Short Shorts Film Festival (SSSF) & Asia, which is now celebrating its 15th anniversary, received a record-breaking 5000+ films from up-and-coming filmmakers around the world this year. In 1999 the festival began as the "American Short Shorts Film Festival", introducing a new world of vibrant film culture to Japan, based in Harajuku, Tokyo. Since its inauguration, SSFF & ASIA has been supported by director George Lucas, also receiving letters of support from Academy Award-winner Roman Polanski and many others in the industry worldwide. In 2002, the festival was renamed "Short Shorts Film Festival", incorporating the international film community and opening its doors to the rest of the world. Then, in 2004, SSFF was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the annual Academy Awards® Short Film category, so they expanded their activities with a view to discovering and nurturing the talent of young filmmakers. Commemorating the festival's 10th anniversary in 2008, Japan's one and only short film theater, Brillia Short Shorts Theater (BSST), was opened in Yokohama City. The theater screens films throughout the year, not just during the festival, presenting movies to ever growing audiences and spreading the word about the charm of the short film genre. It also offers opportunities for film creators to expand their potential.

This short film programme is presented by Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia / Brillia Short Shorts Theater, Yokohama and the City of Yokohama Frankfurt Representative Office.
