Nippon Cinema
After what was a difficult year 2011, Japanese film production is still facing a period of recovery. Its return to a normal state or even further growth is not expected before 2016. Still, an impressive number of 554 new Japanese productions in 2012 speaks a clear language: Amongst audiences, cinema upholds its popularity. And with a 2.2 billion USD box office revenue in 2012, Japanese distribution stays amongst the most relevant worldwide. It is remarkable that, after a year of national crisis, Japanese productions are now experiencing a huge increase in audience numbers. Domestic films pushed back Hollywood's market share to 34 percent – the lowest since 1965. Amongst other objectives, Nippon Connection aims to showcase what's happening in Japan. Yet, of course, we do not only judge by numbers. NIPPON CINEMA looks for quality beyond cultural borders, we follow the visions and passions of Japan´s most exciting directors and offer a platform for their contemporary images. Please join us and decide for yourself: In cooperation with Bankhaus Metzler, we once again honour the most popular film of the section with our NIPPON CINEMA AWARD.
