Political Aspects in Feature and Documentary Films in Japan - Contemporary Forms of Resistance with Selected Examples
Lecture by Jan-Christoph Müller

Filmmakers like Nagisa OSHIMA took up the heated atmosphere of the 1960s/70s in order to adopt socially relevant subjects in their works and stay in tune with the events of their time. However, recent times have also seen such films. Controversial films like Li Ying's YASUKUNI (2007 / NC '08, '12) have sparked wide debates about the meaning of social responsibility. The lecture will shed light on current examples, focusing on aspects of production and reception.
