Frame My Text! Japanese Film Subtitling Workshop with Jonathan M Hall

  • Saturday, June 8, 6:30 p.m. Mousonturm Studio 3
  • Entrance free
  • Lecture in English

Subtitling is more than mere translation. Subtitling is a unique artform that requires both accuracy and creativity, all the while working within formal rules and physical limitations. An avid film & media scholar and curator, Jonathan M Hall also works as a Japanese-to-English film subtitler, interpreter and translator. In this workshop, Jonathan shares with you the challenge and excitement of subtitling using clips from films and television, such as Ryosuke HASHIGUCHI's ALL AROUND US, Satoshi KON's PAPRIKA, and Hideki TAKEUCHI's THERMAE ROMAE (see page 27). You can try your hand at subtitling too, as audience participation is highly encouraged.

In cooperation with Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy (JVTA)
